The Rt Hon Sir John Whittingdale MP has agreed to attend an open debate on August 18 over the proposed relocation of the surgery in Burnham-On-Crouch.

The town's surgery is set to be moved from Foundry Lane to Burnham Waters, the new development on the outskirts of Burnham. The meeting, organised by Burnham-On-Crouch Town Council, is set to take place at Ormiston Rivers Academy at 7pm.

In a letter to Sir Joh Whittingdale, Town Mayor Duncan Rawlinson discussed the "great anxiety" the relocation of the surgery is causing constituents.

He says the proposed address is "out of town, not on a bus route, and therefore remote for those people who do not have their own transportation."

Sir John told Nub News he suggested the meeting, following previous discussions with developers who he says were keen to meet with the town council.

He said: "I have arranged for the developer of Burnham Waters to attend to answer questions and I also hope that the NHS will attend."

The public meeting will involve an open forum where the public are invited to submit questions ahead of time, before the panel takes questions from the floor. It will include Sir John along with other relevant decision makers including NHS representatives.

The meeting is set to run for approximately two hours and will open with introductions before moving to the questions phase. Healthwatch, a committee of the Care Quality Commission, has been invited to attend and act as moderators.

Burnham Waters is a newly constructed retirement community off Maldon Road, opposite Ferry Road. The development has long been a contentious topic, with the public being "physically barred" from attending a Maldon District Council meeting about the proposals last year.
