Maldon district's new container facility: it is hoped this will help facilitate the distribution of supplies to residents in need following the pandemic

A new central storage facility for food and household supplies for residents in need across Maldon district has been launched today (Tuesday, 2 March).

The 'container' facility is at an undisclosed location to help protect supplies.

The new approach has come about as a result of community volunteers and local organisations pulling together to create the 'Community Storage Container' facility, where charities, churches, volunteers, local authorities and other organisations will be able to access supplies to distribute to the individuals and families who need them across the district, from Maldon to Burnham-on-Crouch and the villages of the Dengie.

Building on the coronavirus response team formed in March last year at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, those who will be able to collect supplies from the container to distribute include the Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service – Maldon Family Hub, Maldon and District CVS, Maldon District Council, Moat Foundation and Churches Together in Maldon.

The storage facility will mean the groups can supply food, hygiene and cleaning products, small household items and childcare items to people in need and will ensure that ongoing support is made available.

Sarah Troop, Director at Maldon and District CVS (Community Volunteering Service) said: "During the past 12 months the partnership response set up to support people affected by coronavirus has shown us what can be achieved when we all work together. The new storage facility will ensure that the wrap around support and signposting will continue in the district for years to come".

Councillor Wendy Stamp, Leader of Maldon District Council, said; "I am delighted that we are supporting our partners with this excellent initiative.

"It is a sad fact that due to the coronavirus pandemic, so many are in need of extra support and I am sure that this community storage facility will make a huge difference to those who need it."

Organisations will be able to refer people for support via the website using the link here or members of the public can call the community helpline on 01621 851997.
