A free walking festival exploring the Maldon District's Saltmarsh Coast and surrounding history, culture, and wildlife is set to run from 8 until 17 September.

Organised by the Maldon District Tourism Group, Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival participants will encounter hidden gems around Maldon, Burnham, Goldhanger, Tollesbury, Heybridge Basin, Bradwell, and North Fambridge.

James Burrell-Cook, Landlord of the Queen Victoria Pub and Chair of the Tourism Group, says he is very excited about next month's event.

"The Festival is the first major project for the Maldon District Tourism Group since its creation earlier in the year," he said.

"It is testament to the hard work and collaboration of our members."

More than 20 guided walks are planned, with an additional suite of self-guided walks to explore. Complimentary evening entertainment is planned for each night, including the final night with Christian Lewis.

Ex-paratrooper Christian recently completed a 19,000-mile UK coastline walk, raising £500,000 for charity.

The Saltmarsh Walking Festival is suitable for all ages and abilities. There are different routes and distances to choose from, for those who want a gentle stroll or a challenging hike.

"I hope the Festival will encourage more people to explore some of the amazing natural highlights the area has to offer, as well as learning more of the history that makes the Maldon District so special." Cllr Burrell-Cook added.

Councillor Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: "It is a great demonstration of what we can achieve when local businesses, community organisations, and the Council work together."

The walking festival will end on September 17, incorporating the Maldon Regatta on September 16. It is hoped the festival will also mean an increase in visitors to this year's Regatta.
