MALDON DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTIONS: All results and councillor comments

As votes are counted to decide who will represent each ward in the Maldon District on the council this afternoon (May 5), follow Maldon Nub News for updates and comments from newly-elected and re-elected councillors.
Maldon MP Sir John Whittingdale and Witham MP Priti Patel were present for the count this morning.
See which candidates have been successful in each ward, below.
Maldon West: John Driver (Liberal Democrats) and Flo Shaughnessy (The Maldon District Independent Group)
Liberal Democrat candidate John Driver secured 552 votes and Independent Group candidate Flo Shaughnessy secured 550 votes. They beat Robert Jones (Lib Dem) on 432 votes, Lisa Cullumbine (Ind Group) on 271 votes, Jhual Hafiz (Cons) on 277 votes, and Tom Kelly (Ind) on 89 votes.
Speaking after all results had been declared, John Driver, Chair of the Maldon Liberal Democrats, told Nub News: "We are delighted with the Maldon District Council Liberal Democrat results.
"It is fantastic that we have managed to elect six Liberal Democrat councillors across Heybridge and Maldon, and to have achieved a huge gain in votes across the whole of the District.
"It is particularly pleasing that all district councillors in Heybridge are respected local champions, after a period of much turmoil in the parish.
"We will support and challenge Maldon District Council to meet the needs of all residents. For too long, Maldon District Council has failed to meet the needs of residents. This is a chance for long-awaited and much-needed change."
Maldon North: Kevin Jennings (Liberal Democrat) and Nigel Miller (Conservative)
Liberal Democrat Kevin Jennings secured 736 votes, while Conservative Nigel Miller secured 401 votes. They beat Carlie Mayes (Ind Group) on 375 votes and Robert Shrimpton (Lab) on 248 votes.
Mayland: Wendy Laybourn (Conservative) and Linda Haywood (Independent)
Independent candidate Linda Haywood secured 617 votes and Conservative candidate Wendy Laybourn secured 390 votes. They beat Linda Pailing (Cons) and James Eley (Lib Dem) with 278 and 225 votes respectively.
Wickham Bishops and Woodham: Mark Durham and Simon Morgan (Conservatives)
Conservative candidates Mark Durham and Simon Morgan secured 644 and 635 votes respectively. They beat Jane Williams (Lab) on 260 votes, Anne Church (Lib Dem) on 245 votes, and David Baker (Lab) on 226 votes.
Althorne: Mark Bassenger and Tony Fittock (The Maldon District Independent Group)
Maldon District Independent Group candidates Tony Fittock and Mark Bassenger secured 675 and 512 votes respectively. They beat Conservative candidate James Bardwell and Liberal Democrat candidate Peter Wynn with 390 and 115 votes respectively.
Tolleshunt D'Arcy: Clive Morley and Madeline Thompson (Conservatives)
Conservative candidates Maddie Thompson and Clive Morley secured 607 and 581 votes respectively, defeating John Beal (Lib Dem) with 408 votes.
Great Totham: Jade Hughes and Richard Siddall (The Maldon District Independent Group)
Maldon District Independent Group candidates Richard Siddall and Jade Hughes secured 670 and 591 votes respectively. They beat John Keyes (Cons) on 427 votes, Nicholas Snelling (Cons) on 345 votes, Isobel Doubleday (Green) on 243 votes, and Deirdre Haslam (Lib Dem) on 75 votes.
Purleigh: Susan Paton and Lisa Wiffen (Conservatives)
Conservative candidates Susan Paton and Lisa Wiffen secured 558 and 481 votes respectively. They beat Pamela Calabro (Lab) on 185 votes, Lynne Harrington (Lib Dem) on 180 votes, Ash Jones (Ind Group) on 125 votes, Neil Page (Ind) on 86 votes, and Bridget Eyre on 41 votes.
Maldon South: Kevin Lagan (Independent) and Jeanette Stilts (The Maldon District Independent Group)
Independent candidate Kevin Lagan secured 528 votes and Jeanette Stilts (Ind Group) secured 424 votes. They beat Martin Harvey (Cons) on 361 votes, Robert Hole (Cons) on 264 votes, and John Main (Lib Dem) on 202 votes.
Tillingham (uncontested): Matthew Neall (Independent)
Matthew Neall stood uncontested in the Tillingham Ward, so has been elected to represent it on Maldon District Council.
Southminster: Adrian Fluker (Independent) and Ronald Pratt (Conservative)
Independent candidate Adrian Fluker and Conservative candidate Ronald Pratt secured 533 and 339 votes respectively. They beat Ben Bhattacharya (Lib Dem) on 130 votes and Tim Aves (Lab) on 182 votes.
Burnham-On-Crouch South: Vanessa Bell (Independent, Non-Aligned) and Doug Brown (Conservative)
Independent candidate Vanessa Bell and Conservative candidate Douglas Bown secured 531 and 358 votes respectively. They beat Jennie Donnelly (Ind) on 296 votes, Jackie Brown (Lab) on 168 votes, Stephen Stratton (Ind Group) on 105 votes, Claire White (Green) on 97 votes, James Taylor (Green) on 83 votes, Eileen Rowlands (Lib Dem) on 67 votes, and Joscelyn McInnes (Ind) on 42 votes.
Burnham-On-Crouch North: Una Siddall-Norman (Labour) and Wendy Stamp (True Independent)
Independent candidate Wendy Stamp secured 927 votes, while Una Siddall-Norman (Lab) secured 391 votes. Both have been elected to represent Burnham-on-Crouch North Ward, beating Anne Hull (Cons) on 362 and Blake Matthews (Lib Dem) on 170 votes.
Heybridge East: Nick Spenceley and Nikki Swindle (Liberal Democrats)
Liberal Democrat candidates Nicolas (Nick) Spenceley and Nicola (Nikki) Swindle secured 504 and 441 votes respectively. They beat Bruce Heubner (Cons) on 259, Colin Edmond (Ind Group) on 299 and Anne Beale (Cons) on 316 votes.
Heybridge West: Paula Spenceley and Simon Burwood (Liberal Democrats)
Liberal Democrat candidates Paula Spenceley and Simon Burwood secured 539 votes and 475 votes in their ward respectively. They beat fellow candidates Michael Edwards (Ind Group) on 174 votes and Hayley Board (Cons) on 195 votes.
Tollesbury: Emma Stephens (The Maldon District Independent Group)
Emma Stephens secured a wide margin of the vote with 468 votes - beating Deborah Keating (Cons) on 116 votes and Ross Woolfenden (Lib Dem) on 39 votes.
She told Nub News: "I'm delighted with the result, and that it was a firm result. I'm very happy with the margin.
"I will carry on serving Tollesbury - and I'm very happy to do that."
Emma is a member of the recently-formed Maldon District Independent Group.
Maldon East: Andrew Lay (Independent, Non-Aligned)
Current Maldon Town Mayor Andrew Lay won with 153 votes - narrowly beating Robert Roe (Cons) on 121 votes and Christopher Swain (Ind) on 130 votes.
He told Nub News: "I'm very honoured to represent Maldon East.
"I'd like to thank the voters, and the people who've helped me with this success. I'd also like to thank my fellow candidates for their efforts.
"As a new member, you first need to understand what's actually happening at the District Council. There will be a lot of new and familiar colleagues to work with. I'm looking forward to it.
"I'm only a party of one, but I want to do my best for the residents of Maldon East and the town."
