A Cold Norton community group, open to everyone in the Maldon District for more than three decades, is facing a decline in membership following the recent pandemic.
The Maldon & District Disabled Persons Club began in 1989 as a place for those with disabilities to make friends but has since become a much-needed community group. Held every Wednesday at Cold Norton Village Hall, all are welcome to take part in activities and forge friendships with other residents from the district and further afield.
It is run by Cherrill Holmes, a Cold Norton resident, who told Nub News: "We've lost so many members thanks to COVID, health issues, and some have passed away."
Despite advertising locally, organisers have struggled to attract new members.
Cherrill continued: "It's been very difficult to get the word out about our club."
Some present members joined with loved ones who have since passed away, and stayed for the companionship and support which the group provides.
Participants enjoy games such as boccia, skittles, darts, indoor ball games, and board games – but there is far more to the group than mere activities.
Fiona, who has been a member since the club's formation, told Nub News: "We also have a natter and we put the world to rights."
Members come from as far as Witham and Wickford to take part in the activities.
Cherrill added: "We just have such a great time."
Organisers have also urged local volunteers to come forward, as a growing membership could put extra pressure on those who help to set up the facilities each week.
In spite of the difficulties everybody faced during the pandemic, communities pulled together to support one another. As the world begins to move on, it seems crucial to maintain community connections through initiatives such as The Maldon District Disabled Persons Club.
Members meet every Wednesday, from 1pm until 3pm, and pay a £4 contribution which also goes towards the weekly raffle.
