Maldon Cricket Club is holding a day of "family fun" on Sunday, 29 August in tribute to David Randall, a former cricketer at the club.

This is the tenth time that the event, Rock up for Randall, will be held - after the first event was held in 2011 to support David, who was a member of the club since the age of six, as he underwent treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.

The event is now run as a community fundraising event for the David Randall Foundation (DRF), following David's death on 6 July 2012, aged 27.

A spokesperson for Maldon Cricket Club said: "There will be lots of bits and pieces going on during the day to provide fun for all the family."

The activities will include cricket, an auction, live music, a barbecue, a cake sale, a raffle, stalls, family entertainment and a curry for dinner.

The event combines David's passion for sport and music - he was a founding member of the popular Maldon band Soul Attraction, and performed at numerous charity and club events until his death.

Members of Maldon Cricket Club decided to form the DRF in February 2012, after David was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

On its website, DRF says that it hopes that David "may continue to inspire and encourage others for generations to come" through the charity.

DRF, which is entirely run by volunteers, helps others with life-limiting illnesses to enjoy life to the full by providing financial and logistical support to help facilitate days out - "good days".

Applicants are allocated a DRF volunteer ambassador, who works in coordination with the applicant and the DRF trustees to organise their series of outings.

The charity also offers scholarships and inspirational awards to those dedicated to and passionate about pursuing their ambitions in sport or music, but who may be held back by their financial situation.

So far, DRF has given "good days" to over 150 people and awarded 10 major scholarships and inspirational awards.

The upcoming Rock up for Randall day will be the first held since the pandemic began, as the event was cancelled last year due to Covid.

The event will take place at Drapers Farm, and starts at 10am - entrance is free.
