Up to 300 Santas will compete in a fun run this weekend in memory of much-loved Maldon cricketer David Randall, who was passionate about fundraising.

The David Randall Foundation (DRF) Santa Fun Run will be held at Promenade Park on Sunday morning (19 November) and is free to enter for the first time as a boost to residents during the pandemic.

Michael Foster, from the DRF, said in a statement: "As we all know, it has been a very difficult 18 months or so for many of our supporters.

"Many communities, including our home of Maldon, have suffered from a lack of social interactions, and many local events that galvanise us all have been cancelled.

"We are therefore extremely delighted to confirm the return of the Santa Fun Run and, in light of the financial hardship felt by many of our supporters, we have decided to try and put a much-needed smile on people's faces by making this year's event free to enter."

David was a member of Maldon Cricket Club from the age of six up until his death from cancer in July 2012 at 27.

He competed for Essex in the under-10 to under-19 teams, becoming player of the year for five consecutive years, and was part of the England Under 15 squad.

He was also a keen fundraiser and took part in the Maldon Mud Race to raise money for Macmillan in 2011.

Cricketers from Maldon Cricket Club set up the DRF in February 2012, after David was diagnosed with terminal cancer, to support and bring joy to families in his name.

The DRF, which is entirely run by volunteers, helps people with life-limiting illnesses enjoy life to the full by providing financial and practical support to help facilitate days out - "good days".

The charity also offers scholarships and inspirational awards to those who are passionate about pursuing their ambitions in sport or music, but who may be held back by their financial situation.

The Santa Fun Run is usually held every year to raise money for the foundation and, while it is free to enter this year, donations will be accepted on the day for people who wish to give money.

Over 180 people have already registered for the event, which is capped at 300 participants.

All participants will be given a Santa suit free of charge and can choose to walk or run a 5km or 3km course.

There will also be live music and even a surprise visit from the Maldon Grinch, who is raising money for Macmillan this year.

Registration on the day begins at 9am and the run starts at 10.30am.
