Organisers of Burnham-on-Crouch's Poppy Appeal have announced its return, after the pandemic stopped collectors going out into the streets last year.

Members of the Burnham branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) will be at the town's war memorial on Saturday 13 November between 9am and 4pm to receive donations to the appeal.

The Poppy Appeal is the RBL's biggest fundraising campaign - raising money for the Armed Forces community - and is marking its centenary year this November.

The Jolly Fryer, at 43 High Street, has also got a Poppy Appeal box for residents to make donations.

Alongside the appeal, plans for Burnham's Remembrance Day commemorations have also been revealed by organisers.

On Armistice Day (Thursday 11 November), there will be a short Remembrance service at 10.45am, with exhortations and a minute of silence, at the town's war memorial.

The ceremony will mark the centenary of the first Act of Remembrance, which took place on 11 November 1921 at the war memorial.

This will be followed by the annual Remembrance service and wreath-laying, which will be an open-air service at the war memorial.

The service will begin with a procession from Burnham Baptist Church at 10.30am, and will be followed by the laying of wreaths after a minute of silence.

All residents are invited to attend.

The war memorial was unveiled in the town in 1921, and commemorates 98 local servicemen who died in World War I.
