A group of sporty parents is celebrating after raising £4,000 in under a month to turn their long-held dream of launching a junior parkrun for children in Burnham into a reality.

Having participated in the 5k Burnham parkrun for many years, the parents decided they wanted to create a safe and fun environment for local children to get outdoors, exercise and make new friends.

After gaining permission to hold the junior parkrun at Riverside Country Park, the group launched a fundraising bid to raise the £4,000 required to cover the event's startup fee - including insurance, defibrillators and equipment.

The daunting target quickly became attainable, however, thanks to generous donations from residents and local businesses.

Sammy Hopkins, one of the organisers, said: "I'm absolutely overwhelmed with the support from the community.

"We had large donations from the Burnham carnival committee and others that I know are going to make the world of difference.

"We're all so excited to get this up and running."

Sgt. Pepper's, Hillside Playcare Centre, MTS Security, Boiler Boiler, Protech MOT and Service Centre, Pegler Removals, Sofia's Boutique and Houdini are among the businesses who donated to the fundraiser.

Once it has been set up, the junior parkrun will take place at Riverside Country Park every Sunday morning and will follow a 2k route.

It will be open to children aged four to 14 years old.
