A business in Burnham-on-Crouch is gathering gifts to bring joy to the children's Phoenix Ward at Broomfield Hospital this Christmas.

Children who are staying at the Phoenix Ward will write small requests for gifts that they would like on tags, which will then be added to a Christmas tree at Bistro on the Quay - the Giving Tree.

The Giving Tree is set to be unveiled at the Bistro on Saturday 27 November, but residents can already drop off gifts at the restaurant for the children, which staff will wrap and label on delivery to the ward.

It is being organised by staff at the Bistro and Carlie Boler, the principal of Epic Dance, who has been instrumental in putting the project together.

Those who are not able to get out to the shops can donate to the Bistro's fundraiser and organisers will purchase a gift on your behalf.

Claire Payne, who runs the On the Quay businesses in Burnham, said: "We have the blessing of the ward to go ahead and make this Christmas something a little special for the kids.

"Working alongside the play coordinator in the ward, we will be able to bring some brilliant and much-needed items to the setting."

Examples of gifts you can donate - which must be new and sealed - include new unopened toys, games and toiletries.

"Basically anything will be appreciated," Claire said.

She added: "I have been so lucky in the fact that my children have never been admitted to the Phoenix Ward, but lots of local children have been and now is the time to give something special to those that may be in the ward over Christmas, or that other children may benefit from going forward.

"Obviously depending on how much we raise, we would love to be able to give some items to the doctors and nurses that work tirelessly also."

If you have a specific member of staff you would like a gift sent to, you can include their details with your donation.

Simply head down to the Bistro - at CM0 8AT - to drop off your donations, or Claire can arrange for collections locally.

All donations will be delivered to the ward on Christmas Eve.
