Thursday 5 October

A.K. Blakemore in conversation with Samuel Fisher at The Blue Boar, Maldon - from 7pm

A.K. Blakemore in conversation with Samuel Fisher

Maldon Books is thrilled to welcome back A.K. Blakemore this October to celebrate and discuss her highly anticipated second novel, The Glutton.

Author and poet Amy Katrina Blakemore will be joined by Samuel Fisher, author of 'Wivenhoe' and co-owner of Burley Fisher Books in London.

This event will take place in the upstairs function room at The Blue Boar, located next door to our bookshop. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased directly in the shop or online through Eventbrite. Both authors books will be available to purchase after the event, where you will have the opportunity to have your books signed.

Friday 6 October

Astaria Candlelight Illuminations at the Museum of Power - 6pm until 8pm

Three magical evenings will be held at the Astaria Model Village in the grounds of the Museum of Power, Langford, in October.

On Fridays 6, 13, and 27 October, enjoy candle-lit illuminations, with free entry to both the museum and the model village. It will be open from 6pm until 8pm.

Children and adults can explore Astaria with over 400 candle-lit lanterns, plus fairies and elves.

The Steam Pump Café will be open for refreshments.

The Miniature Railway will also run from 6pm until 8pm. Adult tickets cost £2, child (3-15) £1, and child aged two and under ride for free.

Friends of Heybridge Cemetery to hold Macmillan Coffee Morning - from 10am

The Friends of Heybridge Cemetery in Goldhanger Road will hold a Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Cemetery Chapel this Saturday, from 10am.

Guests can enjoy coffee, tea, hot chocolate and homemade cake - as well as a chance to visit the beautiful chapel. It is the ideal occasion for anyone interested in local history, or who simply wants to support a good cause.

The chapel boasts stained glass windows and beautifully simple pews, seating around 35 people. The nature and wildlife in and around the cemetery, which runs down to the banks of the canal, is eye-catching and abundant in every season, making it a beautiful place to visit lost loved ones.

Browse hand-crafted items, buy gifts and enjoy refreshments at Althorne Church's 'Craft-a-Noon' event on October 7.

From 12 noon until 4pm, explore a wide range of arts and crafts gifts.

Items on offer include:

  • Candles
  • Cards
  • Ceramics
  • Needlework
  • Pottery

Coffee, tea, and cake will also be available to purchase.

Latchingdon Jacks Centre Bowls Open Day - 10am to 4pm

Jacks Centre in Latchingdon will hold a bowls open day to attract new bowlers plus bowlers of all abilities, on Sunday 8 October from 10am.

Participants can play indoors on the centre's excellent full-size rinks. Bowls shoes and bowls will be provided for those who wish to sample the game.

It is a friendly club and facilities include air conditioning, a café and a licensed bar for refreshments.

Bowls is an excellent way to play sport from age 9 to 99, either socially or competitively, and will provide a wide circle of new friends.

The open day will end at 4pm.
