Thursday 28 September
CLAYART, Quintessentially: Homage to the Essex Winged Serpent and other ceramic works at Maeldune Heritage Centre (UNTIL October 14)
CLAYART, quintessentially, a collaboration of five Essex female ceramicists, will showcase their work from 28 September to 14 October at the Maeldune Heritage Centre in Maldon.
This year, each artist will unveil clayart under the central theme of the Essex Winged Serpent, inspired by a centuries-old story about an encounter between a mysterious winged creature and a lone horseman. Dubious sightings of this dragon-like beast were reported in a local pamphlet "Strange News out of Essex", printed in 1669, of which an original copy is held in the British Library.
Rock 'n' roll band Hardwicke Circus at The Golden Fleece, Chelmsford, from 8pm
Emerging rock 'n' roll band Hardwicke Circus is set to bring its unique sound to Chelmsford's Golden Fleece pub on September 28 from 8pm.
The talented five-piece are quickly making a name for themselves as "the hardest working band in rock 'n' roll", thanks to their immense touring schedule.
As part of their Social Circus tour, It will be the first time the Hardwickes have performed in the county.
Lead singer Jonny Foster told Nub News: "We're losing our Essex virginity here.
"We're trying to get to every corner of the country, and we want to win everybody over in Essex."
Friday 29 September
Maldon Town Mayor's Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Town Hall, 10am until 12 noon
Maldon Town Mayor Andrew Lay has invited residents for "a morning of coffee and cake" in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, at the Town Hall on September 29.
From 10am until noon, attendees will indulge in an array of freshly brewed tea and coffee, accompanied by cakes and treats provided by the community. A small donation is requested for the refreshments, all of which will directly benefit Macmillan Cancer Support.
Saturday 30 September
Burnham-On-Crouch Carnival 2023, from 10.30am
Burnham On Crouch Carnival is set to welcome thousands of visitors from all over the Maldon District and Essex on September 30.
Throughout the day, the High Street will be lined with stalls and food vendors for all to enjoy. From 10.30am, the main arena will come alive with an array of entertainment including local '999 races', the annual 'tug of war' competition, and a circus workshop. Live performances from local singers, bands and dance groups will also take place in the arena.
There will be a Children's Fancy Dress competition at 2pm.
In the evening, the town will sparkle with an illuminated procession, starting at 7.30pm. Floats, walking entries, visiting carnival courts and majorettes are set to dazzle visitors.
Sunday 1 October
Prog-rock legend Rick Wakeman to unveil 'Radio Caroline' locomotive at Mangapps Railway Museum, from 11.30am
Legendary progressive rock musician Rick Wakeman is set to unveil a locomotive train dedicated to Radio Caroline, at Burnham's Mangapps Railway Museum on October 1.
After unveiling the 'Radio Caroline' locomotive at around 12 noon, the former 'Yes' keyboardist will drive it down the track.
Two special 'Radio Caroline' nameplates have been cast, along with two 'Caroline' bell plates, which will be fixed to the loco prior to its unveiling.
The diesel train is part of a massive collection of locomotives and rolling stock, plus exhibits, train rides and a huge array of railway memorabilia at Mangapps.
Presenters Ray Clark, Graham Bannerman and Josh Holmes-Bright will join Rick for the unveiling.
Admission to the museum, including train rides and access to all the exhibits, costs £13. Anyone wearing a Caroline T-shirt, new or old, will get discounted entry at £8.
