Police arrest man and appeal for information after two die in rural road crash

DETECTIVES investigating a fatal collision near Althorne have arrested a man from Grays and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. 

Two people died following a collision between four vehicles in Fambridge Road shortly after 6.30pm on Wednesday 1 October. 

A statement from Essex Police says: "We're particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a BMW X5 and Volkswagen Passat, both coloured grey, in the area in the moments before the collision. 

"The vehicles travelled along Burnham Road from Burnham, before entering Fambridge Road and becoming involved in the collision.

"Following the first call, officers and other emergency services attended, working hard at the scene throughout the evening. 

"Very sadly, a woman, aged in her 30s, and a man, aged in his 70s, were pronounced deceased.

"Their families have been informed and are being supported while our investigation continues.

"Another man was taken on to hospital with serious injuries.

"His injuries have since been described as life-changing, but not life-threatening.

"Following further work a man, aged in his 30s, from Grays, was arrested. 

"He remains in custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. 

"Detectives need anyone in the area, either witnesses or people with footage, to get in touch.
