Plans for former Maldon Police Station 'a breath of fresh air', says councillor - as bid recommended for approval

Plans for a vacant police station in Maldon to become offices have been recommended for approval by town councillors, who called the proposal "a breath of fresh air".
Councillor Michael Pearlman praised the application from TFP Financial Planning for the change of use of the former Maldon Police Station on West Square to offices - particularly for its creation of 26 full-time and two part-time jobs in the building.
Recommending the proposal for approval at a meeting of Maldon Town Council's planning committee last night (Monday, 24 January), Councillor Pearlman said: "This is like a breath of fresh air, at long last.
"This really ticks all the boxes for approval."
Maldon Police Station closed in July 2017 when a new police base opened in the district council offices on Princes Road.
An application to convert the former station into five self-contained apartments was refused in October 2020 for reasons including the loss of employment space and a community facility.
TFP Financial Planning now hopes to move into the ground floor of the building, employing around 12 full-time and two part-time employees, as the company is based on Maldon High Street but wants larger premises.
The first floor office space would be rented out to other local businesses, providing for around 14 full-time employees spread over four offices.
The external appearance of the building and the existing car park would not be changed.
Councillor Pearlman said "it's absolutely brilliant news", adding: "The good news is the chestnut tree outside is not going to be touched."
Councillor Mark Heard, chairman of the district council, said: "This is exactly what the building is meant for - it's meant for offices."
He continued: "It's the gateway to the town. It makes a statement."
Councillor Martin Harvey, chairman of the planning committee, added: "This is definitely bringing back employment to that building."
A statement by agent Phase 2 Planning and Development says the site is a "landmark building" but it has been "boarded up, vacant for over four-and-a-half years, and vulnerable to damage, decay and vandalism".
It adds: "Using the building for offices for the growth of a local business in a sustainable location and provision of additional office space to rent for the economic benefit of the Maldon district should be encouraged."
Maldon District Council will make the final decision.
