Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome closed its summer season over the weekend with an exciting event attended by more than 600 people.

The sun shone down on the popular military aviation museum as it showcased rarely-seen aircraft for its finale, the large model airshow, on Saturday 18 September.

Nationally-renowned groups TJD Warbirds and MWM Warbirds were joined by award-winning pilots such as Rory Tooley - famed for his sound-tracked displays - and the Dawn Patrol fighter duo.

They were supported by model-flyers selected from across the country, who displayed a variety of periods and aircraft including jets.

Ian Flint, CEO of Stow Maries, said: "It's always great to host this prestigious event – these models are often valued at more than £20,000 so they can't just fly anywhere. There is an avid national following for this wonderfully visual hobby.

"Our air operations team, led by Denis Stretton – an award-winning large model pilot himself - displayed everything from three metre wingspan WW1 models through to the classic Hawk jet.

"Supported by plenty of displays on the ground, there is no doubt - Stow Maries is the perfect place for these owners to showcase their craft and skills. They love it as much as we do."

Stow Maries has Europe's largest collection of Royal Corps WWI buildings which were not adapted for further military use later in its history.

It is open to the public from 10am to 4pm on Fridays to Sundays.

Visitors can enjoy plenty of attractions at the site, including stargazing nights and a popular escape room.

Pre-arranged group visits, including coach trips, must be made by appointment.

Stow Maries can be found on Hackmans Lane in Purleigh, Maldon.
