Essex Police officers on patrol in the Maldon District seized a samurai sword from a home in Mayland, on Saturday (April 17).

The curved blade was said to be in excess of 50cm, making possession of it a crime under "relatively new" legislation.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We took this offensive weapon away from an individual who had it at home.

"This is a relatively new piece of legislation but ignorance is no excuse."

Under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019, items such as knuckledusters, flick knives, and throwing stars (Shuriken) are illegal to possess in private places.

Swords similar to that seized can be seen in Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill' film series.

Essex Police says foot patrols in the Maldon District are "a great way to get to know the local area and speak with members of the community".
