THE Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain for the rest of the day today (Monday, 12 July) across Maldon, Burnham-on-Crouch and the Dengie Peninsula.

The warning runs from 10am until midnight.

The yellow-rated alert (the lowest level of risk on the warning system, meaning 'be prepared') includes the following forecast:

"Slow-moving, heavy showers, with some thunderstorms, are likely to continue to break out during today.

"This may lead to torrential downpours in some places with 20 to 30mm of rain in an hour and perhaps in excess of 60mm in some spots in two or three hours.

"There is also a chance of more persistent heavy rain developing over parts of southeast England for a time during the afternoon or evening."

The area outlined on the UK map for the warning covers the East of England and includes the whole Maldon district area.
