Shooter Matthew Coward-Holley has brought home bronze at his Olympic debut in Tokyo this year.

Chelmsford-born Matthew won bronze in the men's trap shooting final, taking home Great Britain's 17th medal of the Tokyo Olympics so far.

Maldon MP and media minister John Whittingdale praised Matthew's achievements. He said: "It is fantastic news that Matthew Coward-Holley is bringing home the bronze medal for men's trap shooting.

"I warmly congratulate him and all of Team GB for their fantastic performance which is keeping the nation glued to our TV sets."

26-year-old Matthew stopped shooting at the age of 12 to take up rugby - but his career came to an end after he broke his back twice.

Returning to shooting at 16, Matthew has since become European and world champion in the discipline.

After travelling to Rio as a reserve, Matthew made his Olympic debut in Tokyo this year.

He recovered from his initial shaky start in Thursday's final - missing three of his opening 10 shots - by hitting 14 in a row and scoring 33 out of 40 in total.

He will now compete alongside Northern Ireland's Kirsty Hegarty in the mixed team trap shooting event on Saturday - the duo won gold in the World Cup in Italy in May.
