Maldon Rotary Club has sent £4,000-worth of aid to regions worst affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, where the death toll has risen above 35,000.

A spokesperson for the Club told Nub News: "Maldon's Rotarians are supporting this appeal using monies raised from the people of Maldon and surrounding areas."

The money will be used to purchase 'ShelterBoxes', created by the disaster relief charity ShelterBox. Each box contains survival equipment such as tents, thermal fleece blankets, and tools, along with water purification equipment. They will be delivered by air to where they are needed most.

ShelterBox was established in Cornwall in 2000, and provides emergency shelter and other aid items to families around the world who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict.

Meanwhile, the owner of a Turkish restaurant in Maldon High Street has thanked the public for helping him raise £17,001 in one day, as part of his fundraising appeal.
