More details of this year's Maldon Mud Race were announced by organisers this morning (Tuesday, 19 April) ahead of the event at the weekend.
The famous event on Maldon's mud flats off Promenade Park will take place on Sunday, 24 April, with comedian Jo Brand starting the race. She will be accompanied by her daughter Maisie and boyfriend Alfie, who run for Macmillan cancer, in memory of her Uncle Bill and Sean Lock, both sadly lost to cancer in 2021.
The Maldon Mud Race is free to attend for spectators. It raises funds for Essex charities and has previously attracted crowds of more than 15,000. The event was cancelled due to the Covid situation in both 2020 and 2021, but this year looks to be as big as ever, with William Stock's funfair, a huge artisan food offering plus a stage with entertainment from 10am.
Mud Race organisers have also expressed their delight at Porsche Centre Colchester stepping forward as the main sponsor. Porsche Centre Principal, Mark Goody, said: "We really enjoyed being part of the 2019 race and would have been part of the 2020/21 races which were sadly cancelled due to the Pandemic.
"We are back in force this year and excited to display cars from our range including a Panamera plus our Exclusive Manufaktur programme."
Porsche Centre Colchester will enter a team and Mark Goody has run the race several times, so can let his colleagues know what to expect.
He said: "There's no doubt it's a challenge, no matter what your levels of fitness but it's a great team building event and the crowd really get behind you - added to that, it's visually a colourful spectacular and we enjoy supporting the charity and being part of this really exciting community event."
Maldon Mud race Chairman, Brian Farrington, added, "We can't thank Porsche Centre Colchester enough for their continued support. We were devastated when the race was cancelled, and it was truly sad for the charities that rely on our donations. Knowing Porsche Centre Colchester would continue to support 2022 as main sponsor gave us the opportunity to plan, knowing we had a sponsor, plus they are a super team to work with and we look forward to seeing their wonderful vehicles at the park'"
Many business sponsors are joining the fun, including PGR Building and Timber Ltd Maldon, Rossi's Ice Cream, Wilkin & Sons Tiptree and Jewsons Maldon.
