Maldon district police have warned drivers to make sure they have the correct vehicle insurance in place if they take on work delivering food - after seizing a car yesterday evening (Saturday, 6 March).

Officers posted the following on the 'Essex Police Maldon District' Twitter account last night (@EPMaldon) with the photo above:

"If you're using your personal car to deliver food, you need to have business cover on your insurance.

"Unfortunately this car didn't, and has subsequently been seized under section 165 of the road traffic act!"

It is not revealed in which part of the district the car was seized.

Some members of the public took to Twitter to express disapproval, arguing that the driver could have just been trying "to make ends meet in the middle of a pandemic" while others pointed out that other drivers might be left in a difficult situation if their car should be damaged by a motorist without the correct cover.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: ""We would urge everyone to ensure that they have vehicle insurance which is adequate to their needs."
