A Cambridge University professor and climate activist will speak about his latest project, studying 'Paradise Lost' author, John Milton, at Maldon's United Reformed Church on November 26.
Professor Jason Scott-Warren will talk about his current research project, which aims to piece together Milton's 'lost library'.
The Trustees of Thomas Plume's Library will hold their annual lecture at the church, at the top of Market Hill.
Many consider Milton's 1667 epic poem, Paradise Lost, to be one of the greatest works of literature ever written.
A Cambridge alumnus himself, Milton wrote during a time of extreme political and social upheaval.
As the English Civil War raged on, he became increasingly influential and helped to shift public opinion in the country.
But following the Restoration and Charles II's ascent to power, Milton went into hiding.
He re-emerged after a general pardon was issued but found himself spending a brief stint in prison, before influential friends intervened, and Milton was freed.
In 2019, Professor Scott-Warren himself was arrested for participating in the 'April Rebellion', a series of mass demonstrations across central London.
He was later charged at London Magistrates' Court and fined £800.
Professor Scott-Warren described his trial as a "prosecution by the ecocidal state".
His latest project builds on the discovery of John Milton's copy of Shakespeare's First Folio at the Free Library of Philadelphia, by Professor Scott-Warren and Claire M. L. Bourne.
The Plume Lecture was established in 1975 by the Trustees of the Library. Previous notable speakers include Michael Palin, Terry Waite, and the late Tony Benn.
Doors will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. All are welcome.
Entry is free, but donations are appreciated.
