Local author revives popular pub history book about Maldon’s inns, alehouses, and breweries - for 2022
A local author has spent two years reviving a popular book about the history of Maldon's public houses, first published in the 1980s, for a post-COVID world.
In 1988, Maldon's Ken Stubbings published his book "Here's Good Luck to the Pint Pot!" – A brief history of Maldon's Inns, Alehouses and Breweries. It was the first ever produced on the subject.
Ken's book proved very popular but has been out of print for more than three decades.
That changed in 2020, when Dr Patrick Chaplin, a local author and Chairman of the Pub History Society, began to revive it.
He says there was "a genuine need to revisit Pint Pot", so set about writing.
Dr Patrick told Nub News: "I obtained the necessary permissions to reproduce and gently edit Ken's work.
"All the advertisements and images that appeared in the original Pint Pot remain, but I have also added further black and white and colour images."
Dr Patrick has also added two chapters, one about the town's micro-pubs and another looking at Maldon's pubs through today's perspective, including thoughts of pubs post-Covid.
The new version includes a tribute to Ken, who died in 2012.
This 'revisited Pint Pot' keeps true to Ken's original but is an updated, expanded and carefully revised version of the 30-year-old classic.
Dr Patrick hopes it will appeal to anyone interested in Maldon and Heybridge's pubs, as well as Maldon's history in general.
"Here's Good Luck to the Pint Pot!" – A brief history of Maldon's Inns, Alehouses and Breweries - Revisited by Ken Stubbings and Patrick Chaplin, costs £10 and is available from Maldon Books in the High Street, the Maeldune Heritage Centre or direct from Patrick (01621 856040).
