The following is a seasonal message from Councillor Richard Siddall, the leader designate of Maldon District Council, as he reflects on a "difficult year" with "brighter days ahead".

I would like to begin by thanking all of our partner organisations, volunteers, fellow councillors at district, town and parish councils and particularly the staff of the district council for their commitment and dedication again this year.

It has been a very difficult year for many residents, organisations and businesses who once again have faced a number of challenges due to Covid. I can only hope that as we move into 2022, things will gradually show signs of improvement.

The national vaccine rollout has been unprecedented and the way in which our health partners have risen to the challenge has been incredible. All those who work in the NHS and other public services should be commended for their commitment.

I am delighted that the council has been able to play a key role in supporting our partners with the use of our offices as a vaccination hub.

I pay tribute to all of the council staff, health professionals and of course the amazing volunteers who have made the vaccination centre such a great success.

Although it is clear we will need to live with Covid for some time, there are brighter days ahead. Next year we will celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, and I do hope that as a district we will all join together to mark this historical event.

As leader designate, I would like to wish each and every one of you a merry Christmas and that you have a healthy, safe, peaceful and happy New Year.

Councillor Richard Siddall,

Leader designate of Maldon District Council
