Historic Maldon District: rooms with a view – Maldon's rooftop summer houses
Tucked away in the local authority's 'Maldon area review' is a reference to a particular Maldon feature – the 'tower-like belvederes… used originally by ship owners for keeping an eye on waterside activities'.
The word 'belvedere' comes from the Italian for 'fine view' and can mean any type of structure commanding a fine view, usually built on top of a building, like a turret, cupola or open gallery. In Maldon's case, more recent examples may just look like summer houses on roofs.
With our eyes fixed on avoiding pedestrians, cars and trip hazards, we miss out on Maldon's interesting skyline. In particular, the belvederes take a little effort to find. But when we see them, we're reminded of a generation who kept their eyes glued to the horizon, and Maldon's coastal and continental links.
Pride of place must go to the magnificent belvedere at Hill House, off Market Hill. The early Nineteenth Century former Borough Council offices has a prominent belvedere with a pyramid slate roof and small-pane windows filling every side, which must give magnificent views.
Almost opposite is 20 Market Hill, probably dating from a little earlier than Hill House. The belvedere in this case sits atop a white weatherboarded tower.
Dating back to the 1500s, the Jolly Sailor is in pole position for observation of boats coming in down the estuary, and this view is enhanced by a belvedere over the main block, rendered with a slate hipped roof and small-paned windows on three faces.
The belvedere tradition continues: Chelmer Terrace has one interesting tribute to the design, with a black weatherboarding tower at the end of the house with views of the estuary and the boatyards.
Leaping forward into very recent times, the Maldon Lighthouse apartment block makes a bold statement at the foot of Market Hill as you cross the river. The 'lantern style' belvedere is both an imitation of the more traditional ones scattered around the town, and a visual reminder of a lighthouse lantern room.
