The Maldon Society's first talk for the autumn season will be '125 years of Ernest Doe', given by Sales Director Graham Parker on September 7.

Graham's talk will be given at the Cygnet Room behind the Swan Hotel in Maldon High Street. The doors will open at 6.30pm with the meeting starting at 7pm. This gives everyone the opportunity to buy a drink from the bar and chat with the committee and friends.

On June 24, Ernest Doe & Sons celebrated a significant milestone in the company's history. For 125 years (Quasquicentennial), this family-owned business has grown and flourished.

To mark the anniversary of Ernest Doe founding the business in Ulting in June 1898, third and fourth generations (Daphne Chandler and Colin Doe) formally planted an evergreen Oak outside the front of the showroom.

Today, Ernest Doe & Sons Ltd is one of the largest agricultural, horticultural and construction dealers in the UK. Angus Doe has now taken over from his father as Managing Director. There are now 19 locations with fourteen branches in East Anglia and five are situated south of the River Thames in Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent.

The latest Maldon planning applications can also be viewed on the Society's noticeboard before the talk. To attend, pre-register via email or call Dorreen Linton on 01621 853428.

Upcoming Maldon Society talks:

  • Thursday 5 October  - Climate Change: What does it mean for Maldon? - David Fell
  • Thursday 2 November - Tiptree Heath: Its History & Current Conservation - Joan Pinch
  • Thursday 4 January - The History of Beckingham Hall - David Newman
