In his latest regular column, the chairman of Maldon District Council, Councillor Mark Heard, discusses the annual day of dedication which took place at Maldon Cemetery last week.

The annual day of dedication[.L] took place at the Woodland Glade area in Maldon Cemetery on Saturday, 4 December.

Sadly, I was unable to attend this important occasion owing to my own family commitments, but I was very grateful that the vice-chair of the council, Councillor Carlie Mayes, attended on my behalf. Local celebrant Glenn Mayes also attended, leading a short dedication.

I was delighted to hear that turnout was very good and a number of families gathered at the cemetery to plant trees and shrubs as a lasting and living tribute to their loved ones who have passed, and to help the Woodland Glade flourish into a beautiful woodland.

The philosophy of the natural burial area is to develop a natural environment, creating a peaceful, tranquil resting place with an awareness of the ecological benefits that come from the establishment of woodlands and natural grasses.

The area's natural approach means it is a living place, so as the seasons change, the woodlands change in their character. The natural grasses, spring and summer wildflowers and the autumnal colours make this a beautiful setting to visit and remember a loved one.

The cemetery team, Friends of Maldon Cemetery, and volunteers have been working on several initiatives over the past year to recognise and encourage wildlife in this area, such as the Blue Heart campaign which encourages areas of wildflower and grasses to be left for butterflies, bees and other insects and small animals.

Maldon District Council's cemetery team are proud to be "hog heroes", supporting the British Hedgehog Preservation Society by providing crucial undisturbed habitat for hedgehogs. The team was also delighted to discover newts breeding in the nearby pond.

I know that Councillor Carlie Mayes, who is also chair of the Friends of Maldon Cemetery, was delighted that so many families joined in for what is always a very moving and poignant occasion.

I am grateful not only to her but also our Cemetery team, and the dedicated volunteers and Friends of Maldon Cemetery, who work tirelessly to provide a beautiful place where visitors can take the time to sit with their own thoughts and appreciate the surroundings in this tranquil place.
