A move by Tesco Express Burnham to change its look has been approved by council officers, who have granted retrospective planning permission to the store.

Tesco had already added two vinyl graphics to the southern side of its Burnham store, at 150-152 Station Road, but applied to Maldon District Council for retrospective approval at the end of December last year.

The graphics are not illuminated and are stuck adjacent to each other on window panes on the side of the store.

Approving the change, district council officers said the position of the graphics is "not considered to be a distraction to passing traffic, which would result in a danger to public safety".

The officers added: "The adverts are not considered to be excessive in size compared to the building which they are being displayed upon.

"The signage is of a generic type and are visible from within the car park on the site and from within the streetscene of Station Road and Brickwall Close due to the openness of the boundaries of the application site being located on a corner plot.

"However, due to the position of the graphics, they are not considered to detrimentally impact on the character and appearance of either streetscene."

Tim Howson, the conservation officer at the [L]https://burnhamanddengie.nub.news/n/maldon-district-council-appoints-new-conservative-leader-in-meeting-disrupted-over-public-participation-concerns[L+]district council, was also consulted on the application as the store is located just outside the Burnham Conservation Area.

Raising no objections, he said the graphics would "cause no harm to the setting, significance, character or appearance of the adjacent conservation area".
