Maldon district: Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome brought history to life at weekend event

STOW Maries Great War Aerodrome celebrated the fabulous cultural heritage of the county this weekend with its new 'A Time for Essex' event.

The celebrated museum, already a popular spot for history and aviation fans, put on the event featuring 'living history' displays, flying historic aircraft and interactive talks yesterday (Sunday,

25 July).

The special day defied challenging weather forecasts to give a great experience to nearly a thousand guests on a wonderfully dry and sunny Essex Summer Sunday.

With Covid security measures in place, the Visit England 'Good to Go' site welcomed visitors from near and far to enjoy a great family day out. Formations of aircraft wowed spectators and a highlight of the display was a simulated 'dogfight' between two Great War fighter aircraft – the British BE2e and the German Albatross.

Sow Maries CEO Ian Flint said: "Our Volunteer-led site is so happy to welcome all the visitors from across Essex and further afield.

"We have had excellent feedback and we are overjoyed with the number of new supporters that

joined us.

"We are very proud of the rich history of our county, and the success of this event proves that there is an appetite for heritage and culture across Essex."

-Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome boasts Europe's largest collection of Royal Flying Corps WW1 buildings which were not adapted for further military use later in its history. During 2021, it is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, Friday to Sunday. Pre-arranged group visits, including coach trips, can made by appointment.
