The MP for Maldon has paid tribute to fellow Conservative MP Sir David Amess, who has died after being stabbed as he met constituents at a regular surgery in Essex.

Sir David, who represented Southend West, was stabbed multiple times this afternoon (Friday 15 October) at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

He was treated by emergency services but died at the scene.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody.

Essex Police has said that officers are not looking for anyone else in connection to the attack.

In a statement, Mr Whittingdale said: "David Amess was a great friend and a brilliant MP for nearly 40 years.

"His death is truly shocking and a huge loss to his constituents and to parliament.

"At this time, all our thoughts are with his family."

The district council said: "On behalf of the members and staff at Maldon District Council, we offer our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sir David Amess MP at this very difficult time."

Sir David, 69, had been an MP for Southend West since 1997 and first entered parliament in 1983.

He was married with five children.
