Organisers of the annual Burnham-on-Crouch bonfire have announced that the popular event is set to go ahead this year.

Hundreds of spectators flock to St Mary's Church each year to watch the fiery display light up the town.

But, last year, the event - which was due to take place on Saturday 7 November - had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

Tony Young, the lead organiser and churchwarden at St Mary's, said at the time: "The event has proved so popular over the years, with a crowd of over 1,000, that we don't feel the event can proceed with the essential social distancing required.

"We appreciate this will be a big disappointment to the town and the wider communities who attend, but please be assured we will be back in 2021 big and better."

The bonfire's triumphant 2021 return was confirmed by organisers in a statement on Monday (27 September).

They said: "Now the carnival is over, we can turn our minds to the next big community event - the Great Burnham Bonfire.

"We can confirm the event is definitely on."

The display is set to take place on the evening of Saturday 6 November.

More details will be announced soon.

St Mary's Church can be found on Church Road in Burnham-on-Crouch.
